Myanmar – Drone films monuments damaged by quake | Editor’s Pick | 26 August 16

Drone pictures filmed over Myanmar on Friday show the extent of the damage done by Wednesday’s earthquake to a number of the temples in the ancient city of Bagan.

The images give the clearest picture yet of how badly the structures – some of them dating back to the 10th century – suffered when the 6.8 magnitude quake occurred.

At least four people were killed and as many as 185 brick pagodas were damaged.

The earthquake was centered about 25 kilometres (15 miles) west of Chauk, just south of Bagan.

Bagan is home to more than 2,200 structures, and is one of Myanmar’s most celebrated cultural sites.

Many of the monuments are in disrepair, while others have been restored in recent years, aided by the United Nations cultural agency UNESCO.
